Aalto University is a multidisciplinary community of bold thinkers, where science and art meet technology and business. The Probabilistic Machine Learning Group participating in CO-ADAPT is located at the Department of Computer Science and is part of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.

Our role in COADAPT is to develop the machine learning behind the User Modeling and Proactive Digital Entity Recommender. The research group develops new methods for probabilistic modeling, Bayesian inference and machine learning. Current focuses are in particular learning from multiple data sources, Bayesian model assessment and selection, approximate inference and information visualization. Our primary application areas are digital health and biology, neuroscience and user interaction. Key persons participating in the COADAPT project are Professor Samuel Kaski, PhD students Zeinab Rezaei Yousefi and Pedram Daee.

The group contributes to the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) which is recently established flagship initiative of the academy of Finland. FCAI works towards the next generation of AI that is interactive, dependable, and data-efficient. It aims to boost and extend AI research and its applications by bringing together universities, industrial actors and the public sector. Our goal is to solve three bottleneck questions in AI research: data scarcity, dependability of AI, and ability of AI to understand its users.

Our main tasks in CO-ADAPT and how we fit in

The Probabilistic Machine Learning Group lead by Prof Kaski will contribute in particular with probabilistic machine learning techniques in WP5 and WP3. In particular AALTO will be in charge of developing the machine learning behind the Proactive Digital Entity Recommender.

  • Leader of T3.1 Implementation of the Proactive Entity Recommender
  • Contributing machine learning techniques in T5.3 User Modeling and Program Selection
  • Supporting the trial and analysis of the Proactive Entity Recommender
